Background of the Study
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) refers to the actions taken by companies to contribute to societal goals, beyond their profit-driven objectives. In the Nigerian oil and gas sector, CSR initiatives have gained prominence as companies face increasing pressure from stakeholders, including the government, environmental groups, and local communities, to minimize their environmental impact and promote sustainable development (Oluwaseun & Ajayi, 2023).
Nigerian oil and gas companies have a critical role in fostering sustainable growth, given their significant economic contributions and the environmental challenges associated with oil extraction and production. CSR initiatives in this sector have ranged from community development projects to environmental conservation efforts. However, the impact of these CSR activities on long-term sustainable growth remains a subject of debate (Oluwaseun, 2024).
This study examines the role of CSR in driving sustainable growth among Nigerian oil and gas companies, highlighting the correlation between responsible corporate practices and overall growth within the sector.
Statement of the Problem
The oil and gas sector in Nigeria has long been associated with environmental degradation, corruption, and poor social outcomes for local communities. Although CSR initiatives have been implemented, questions remain about their effectiveness in achieving true sustainable growth and addressing the social and environmental challenges in the oil-producing regions (Ogunyemi, 2023).
This study seeks to assess the relationship between CSR practices and sustainable growth in Nigerian oil and gas companies, addressing gaps in knowledge and providing recommendations for enhanced corporate responsibility.
